His parents were forced to make the heartbreaking decision to take him off life support after three days of no brain activity.
Luke Jenkins had already undergone several surgeries for his heart condition, including one which left him quadriplegic.
According to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, the care the child received at the facility, Bristol Children’s Hospital was “service failure”.
Luke’s father said “We are now going to use the report as evidence against specific nurses and doctors to report them to the General Medical Council.
“Complaints against them were previously rejected; now, however, the PHSO report backs up our complaint, saying that they fell below the applicable standards of their profession.”
The investigation into the child’s death revealed that it was a bank holiday and there were staff shortages in the hospital on that particular day. When Luke suffered his cardiac arrest staff didn’t know where the resuscitation equipment was located.
